Can please someone help me build Altec 620 cabinet(?)

Hi,

I've got $3,000 give or take to spend on a cabinet. I'm thinking about the Altec 620 cabinet design(?). The horn on the Altec 604 8H III should be at least 38-1/2" (ear height), so I would need stands most likely. I'm interested in having some uniquely designed stands! The drivers are not part of my budget, so you don't have to worry about that. The cabinet budget is $3,000 or so.

I live in Houston, Texas, and am looking for a professional cabinet builder who can work very well with veneer. There was a guy who lived 3 hours away from me who planned to build me one for around that price and even drive to my house and help solder and set it up. I'm guessing finding someone like that here would be one in a million, but that's alright.

I'd like pricing on a curly birch veneer (staircase picture included as attachment) with that same color. For the finish, I'm thinking of General Finishes Wipe-On Satin Urethane - most veneers 3 coats. Hard to find and expensive. You can pick up at Woodcraft or internet. I do not want any crap from the big box stores.

For the grille, I'm thinking of having one one wrapped around the entire driver (not the cabinet). Grills would be friction fit, ratshack grille-cloth (or whatever acoustic grille cloth of your choice) covered MDF rings with neoprene gaskets on the inside diameter to grab the drivers. I will include a picture of what it would look like and would love your thoughts on it. I'd rather have this than the velcro grilles (magnet would be better if you did that).

With that said, I'd need some great binding posts, acoustical dampening material inside, and that's about it.

Contact Wardsweb, he is a master craftsman and he is in your state, but it might cost a little more that is a complicated build.

Why lose floor loading by using stands? Instead make it a full height MLTL alignment with the height optimized for your 38.5" ear height? It's superior in some ways over the 620, though with normal tuning won't have Altec's somewhat 'boomy' 'west coast sound', so would need to know if this is preferred as it affects the vent location, tuning.


If this appeals to you, then what are your allowable max HxWxD dimensions and where in room in relation to its walls, huge pieces of furniture, etc.? Ideally need a floor plan with basic dimensions including the listening position [LP].
